Hong Kong is making its mark on the Asian higher education scene, and the latest QS Asia University Rankings 2027 have given the city another reason to celebrate. City University of Hong Kong (CityUHK) has climbed to fourth place in Asia, marking its first-ever appearance among the region’s top five universities.
The achievement is more than just a new number on a university ranking. It reflects the growing strength of Hong Kong as a destination for international education, research and academic collaboration, while highlighting how CityUHK is steadily building its reputation beyond the city.
With 1,725 institutions included in this year’s rankings, CityUHK’s fourth-place finish puts it firmly among Asia’s leading universities. The university also secured second place in Hong Kong, moving up three positions from last year and adding another milestone to its academic journey.
What makes this year particularly exciting is the wider picture. For the first time, three Hong Kong universities have landed among Asia’s top five, with the University of Hong Kong taking first place, CityUHK coming in fourth and the Chinese University of Hong Kong securing fifth.
It is a strong showing for the city, especially as Hong Kong continues to position itself as an international education hub where students and academics from different parts of the world can come together.
While rankings often grab attention because of the numbers, CityUHK’s performance this year also tells a story about the university’s academic strengths and international outlook.
The university ranked first in Asia in three key areas: staff with PhDs, international faculty and outbound exchange students. These results highlight its focus on attracting highly qualified academics while giving students opportunities to experience education beyond their home campus.
Having a diverse academic community can make a real difference to the university experience. Students get to learn from lecturers with different backgrounds and perspectives, while international exchange programmes open doors to new cultures, ideas and learning environments.
CityUHK’s strong performance in these areas suggests that its global approach is becoming an increasingly important part of its identity.
The university also topped Hong Kong in eight indicators, including research-related measures and internationalisation. It ranked first locally for staff with PhDs, citations per paper and papers per faculty, reflecting its continued emphasis on research quality and academic output.
For students, these achievements offer a glimpse into the kind of academic environment the university is building, one where research and learning are closely connected.
CityUHK’s international standing has been another major part of its progress.
The university ranked first in Hong Kong for all four internationalisation indicators for the fourth consecutive year, covering international faculty, international students, inbound exchange students and outbound exchange students.
That consistency is worth highlighting. A university’s international character is not simply about having students from different countries on campus. It is also about creating opportunities for people to exchange ideas, collaborate and learn from experiences that go beyond their own communities.
CityUHK’s continued performance in these areas reflects its efforts to create a campus with a wider global reach.
The university also secured the top local position for its faculty-student ratio, another indicator linked to the learning environment and the relationship between students and academic staff.
Meanwhile, improvements in academic reputation and employer reputation point to growing recognition from both the academic community and the workplace.
For graduates, that recognition can help strengthen the university’s profile as they move into an increasingly competitive job market.
CityUHK’s latest achievement also comes with two additional QS honours.
The university received the Research and Discovery Champions award, recognising its performance in academic reputation, research citations and publication output.
It also received the Learning Experience Champions award, which highlights the quality of its learning environment, including its faculty-student ratio and highly qualified academic staff.
Together, the awards reflect two important sides of university life: producing meaningful research and creating an environment where students can learn and grow.
CityUHK has also built a strong presence in other international rankings. It has been recognised by Times Higher Education as the world’s most international university for three consecutive years and is among the Hong Kong institutions ranked within the top 100 across the four major global university rankings: QS, THE, US News and ShanghaiRanking.
These achievements help reinforce its position as a university with ambitions that extend well beyond Hong Kong.
Professor Chun-Sing Lee, Acting President of CityUHK, described the university’s rise to fourth place in Asia as an encouraging achievement, crediting the collective efforts of its academic community and its commitment to research excellence, teaching and attracting international talent.
He also highlighted the university’s intention to continue strengthening interdisciplinary collaboration, expanding international academic exchange and welcoming outstanding students and scholars from around the world.
CityUHK plans to support the Hong Kong SAR Government’s Study in Hong Kong initiative, which aims to strengthen the city’s role as an international education destination.
As Hong Kong’s universities continue to gain recognition across Asia, the city’s education landscape is becoming increasingly competitive and globally connected.
For CityUHK, reaching the top five is a significant moment, but it is also a starting point for what comes next.
The next challenge will be turning that recognition into lasting opportunities for students, researchers and the wider community. And if its latest performance is anything to go by, CityUHK is determined to keep moving forward.
