135 Flood Victims In Jasin Return Home

Jasin – The 135 flood victims from 30 families who were evacuated after their homes in Bukit Senggeh, Selandar and Pondok Kempas were inundated by flood waters last night, were allowed to return home this morning.

National Security Council’s Melaka assistant secretary, Jafri Mohamed said the flood waters subsided this morning and the victims who were evacuated to the Bukit Senggeh and Selandar community halls, Sekolah Kebangsaan Selandar and Al-Hasanah Mosque, here, were allowed to return home at 8am today.

“The floods were caused by heavy rain while the river in the area is too small to cope with the increased volume of water,” he said when contacted.

Jafri also said that an embankment in Jalan Dahlia 6, Taman Bunga Raya, Central Melaka, near here, collapsed yesterday evening following a heavy downpour.

“From our observation until today, there is still some earth movements at the embankment but there is no evacuation of residents. However, the Social Welfare Department is prepared for any eventuality,” he added.

Jafri said an officer from the Mineral and Geoscience Department had come to monitor the soil structure in the area. – Bernama
