Kota Bharu – Four families watched helplessly as flood waters carried away their houses here.
In the 6pm incident Tuesday, four houses and a restaurant in Kampung Kundur were destroyed before flood waters carried the building pieces towards Sungai Galas, about 100 metres from the location of the houses.
Victim Zakaria Daud, 56, said he and 16 others were on a hill about 500 metres across the road from the houses.
“We decided to save ourselves by moving to the hill after water continued to increase up to our chest,” he said when contacted by BERNAMA, Wednesday.
Zakaria said water rose quickly and they managed to only salvage several important documents.
“While we were observing the houses from on top of the hill, an oil tanker from a logging area also crashed into the houses one by one, including my restaurant.
“Things happened so quickly. We could only watch everything drift away from afar,” said Zakaria.
He said the four families affected are now temporarily staying with relatives or friends.
According to Zakaria, he has resided in the area for over 10 years and it had never experienced such a massive flood.
Besides the four houses which were washed away, six other houses were seriously damaged in the incident. – Bernama
