Putrajaya – The government has agreed to extend the temporary work permit for over 300,000 foreign workers under the 6P programme for one more year, giving more time for employers to find replacements.
Home Ministry acting secretary-general Datuk Alwi Ibrahim said based on records from the Immigration department, 352,493 foreign labourers under the 6P programme would complete their term of employment at the end 2014 and 2015.
“The government realises that the loss of workforce in large numbers will cause a major impact on business entities and the economy.
“The Cabinet had agreed to the one year extension to allow employers who had failed to send their foreign workers back after the expiry of the prescribed period of employment,” Alwi said today.
Depending on their sectors, foreign workers employed under the 6P programme were given permits of between two and three years. – NST
