Deputy Umno President Muhyiddin Yassin will announce his candidacy for the Umno President’s post when he speaks at a gathering in Kampung Baru tonight, according to a pro-Najib blog.
MyKMU.net, quoting unnamed sources, said today that the sacked deputy prime minister would tell the gathering that he would lead a team of five against Najib and his team in the next party polls, scheduled for 2018.
It said Kedah Menteri Besar Mukhriz Mahathir will seek the post of deputy president.
According to MyKMU, the other three members of the team, who will vie for vice-presidential posts, are former rural and regional development minister Shafie Apdal, Johor Menteri Besar Mohamed Khaled Noordin and former Terengganu menteri besar Ahmad Said.
Shafie was sacked from the Cabinet along with Muhyiddin last July.
Tonight’s function, which is scheduled to begin at 8.30, has been highly anticipated. Muhyiddin will address Umno members at the Sultan Sulaiman Club in Kampung Baru.
Umno Secretary-General Tengku Adnan Mansor was quoted today as warning Muhyiddin against “crossing the line” in his speech.
According to a report on the Barisan Nasional Backbenchers Club’s website, Tengku Adnan said, “I don’t know of this story about him giving a speech. It’s up to him. Just don’t cross the line. You cross the line, we take action.”
