Serdang – Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin encouraged the promotion of Mandarin as an important third language for Malaysians.
Muhyiddin, who is also education minister, said that the teaching of Mandarin was among the focus of attention in the progress of education.
“I had discussed this with leaders from China during my recent visit there. This is in line with the call for our children to be given the opportunity to learn Mandarin as a third language.
“The Chinese government has agreed to assist us in providing skilled Mandarin trainers to help our Mandarin language teachers to profess the language,” he said at the Education Ministry’s Family Day at University Putra Malaysia today.
Present were his wife Puan Sri Noorainee Abdul Rahman, Second Education Minister Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh and Deputy Education Ministers P. Kamalanathan and Datuk Mary Yap Kain Ching.
Muyhiddin said the promoting Mandarin was aimed at enriching the education system that included Bahasa Malaysia and English, as expressed in the Malaysian Education Blueprint 2013-2025.
“We are also collaborating with China to promote Bahasa Malaysia there, where eight of their universities have begun teaching the language,” he said.
Muhyiddin reminded his staff of the increasingly importance they played following the emphasis on education as a primary concern. -NST
